Why did you get involved in Student LEAF?

“I don’t consider myself to be a crazy radical; I’m more of a behind-the-scenes activist. Though I won’t be the one who chains themselves  to a Sequoia, doesn’t mean I don’t want to incite change. I care about my environment and I wanted to make a difference in a way that made sense for my personality and skills. Working as the Public Relations Representative for Student LEAF allows me to do what I love for a cause I love at the university I love!”

What is you dream proposal for UNC?

“A botanical garden! A beautiful garden with every kind of plant, vegetable, or fruit, all colors and shapes—I’m talking butterflies and blooming orchids. The works. All those colors in one place, it’s like a party for your eyes. And Dining Services could use the fruit and vegetables grown there. Sustainable and gorgeous. My favorite combination.”

Brit Dunn

Treasurer

“ The planet does not need more ‘successful’ people. But it does desperately need more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of every shape and form. It needs people who live well in their places. It needs people of moral courage willing to join the fight to make the world habitable and humane. And these needs have little to do with success as our culture has defined it.”

Why did you get involved in Student LEAF?

“I believe my biggest aspiration before I knew about Student LEAF was to help encourage others and make them aware of most of environmental problems that we see throughout this world. Not by preaching to others but to have simple discussions and be more empathetic and engaged with the solutions. After last year knowing about student LEAF I felt that this was a great starting point to start that ideal approach. Student LEAF has been a great launch pad for reaching out to the Greeley Community and I hope we can continue to bring more awareness of sustainable efforts to the campus as well as the town!”

What is you dream proposal for UNC?

” I would propose that we help renovate every type of housing on campus to allow every dorm room as well as each house students live in to be self sustainable and run without any type of utility. I think the best way to start thinking sustainable is by living sustainable and this is a great way to get that type of awareness! Education throughout living sustainable would be the biggest advocate and I believe living without utility bills is just a bonus!! “

Why did you get involved in Student LEAF?

“I joined Student LEAF was to get involved in something at UNC that I really had a passion for- environmentalism and living sustainably. Starting Student LEAF last year we came up with the goals we wanted to see enacted on our campus that will not only benefit the students and university in a sustainable way but show our responsibility to the earth in as many ways possible. Personally, i wanted a way to educate and show people not only how they can live sustainably in an easy way but why they should. Education is one of the largest barriers in communicating why we should live earth friendly and through LEAF we can overcome that.”

What is you dream proposal for UNC?

“To have most of the campus run off clean energy, especially solar and wind power. It is completely possible but very expensive. If we could have solar panels be a physical representation of our clean energy (whether it be on rooftops or parking lots), it would not only show how we are providing responsibility to our planet, but serve as an educational tool in the environmental studies program. “

Why did you get involved in Student LEAF?

“Student Leaf has been the answer to all of my complaints about this campus. Every piece of this University is set in place to make UNC something incredible, we have the staff, the campus, the students, and the community but we are limited as far as the means go to create an environmentally friendly campus. I truly believe that Student LEAF is one of the final pieces to this puzzle.”

What is you dream proposal for UNC?

“With an endless supply of funding I would love to create a completely self-sufficient hydroponic system for dining services and grounds crew to be able to grow all of its food and vegetation. This would not only supply grounds crew with all of its flowers, but would give more meaning to every meal at the dining hall. Students, Staff, and patrons could learn to appreciate the idea that food doesn’t just come from grocery stores.”

Why did you get involved in Student LEAF?

“ I was inspired to continue the efforts begun in the 2012 Environmental and Sustainable Studies Senior Seminar course in pursuing the creation of a green fund at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC). More specifically, I shared, with my fellow classmates, a hunch that the development of a comprehensive green fund could empower the campus community to collaborate and transform UNC into a more sustainable campus and culture.”

What is you dream proposal for UNC?

“I would propose the creation of a Center for Environmental and Sustainable Studies. The Center’s purpose would be to further the knowledge of the field and to education the campus community on how to live more sustainably. My proposal is based on my belief that in order for Student LEAF to make great strides towards accomplishing its mission: “empowering a sustainable campus community,” the students, faculty, and staff must be willing and educated to adopt a lifestyle that would render such an outcome.”

Patrick “Patty” Hogan

Secretary

“But is the nature of civilization ‘speed’?  Or is it ‘consideration’? Any animal can rush around a corral four times a day.  Only a human being can consciously oblige themselves to go slowly in order to consider whether they are doing the right thing, doing it the right way, or ought to in fact to be doing something else…Speed and efficiency are not in themselves signs of intelligence or capability or correctness.”

Why did you get involved in Student LEAF?

“I saw that Student LEAF had a lot of potential to help make this campus a better place, and I wanted to help out in any way possible. I enjoy Environmental & Sustainability Studies, and am always looking for ways to improve my life by living more sustainably; I felt that by getting involved with Student LEAF I could help positively impact our student body, UNC campus, and the whole community by giving students, staff, and faculty the ability to bring their projects to life.”

What is you dream proposal for UNC?

“If money were unlimited, I would let all the grass on campus slowly die, and then replace our landscape with xeriscaping. Water is such a limited resource in Colorado, and I believe there are better uses for it than to maintain the health of non-native grasses! I love gardens, grass, and trees, but I also love practicality. I think that a xeriscape campus would be awesome, and could lead our community by example, cutting back on water usage by an enormous amount.”
